Why Not You?
WHY NOT YOU?
Have you ever felt like God was nudging you to do something, but you hesitated because you somehow felt afraid, disbelief or unqualified? Maybe all of the above?
You may have questioned the validity of what you heard God say or a “feeling” you received from the Holy Spirit to say or do something, and you were reluctant to act on it because you didn’t want to be embarrassed if it didn’t turn out the way you thought it should. Or you may have even wanted more confirmation.
As we look at the story in Luke 1:26-38 we see a young woman named Mary who was visited by angel. Here she was, in her home, minding her own business when God sends and angel to give her an assignment. She was told that she would give birth to a child who would be called the Son of God who she would be responsible to take care of.
Her initial response was disbelief as she asked the question in verse 34, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (KJV) You see, Mary knew that she was a virgin and that she was engaged and had no intention of jeopardizing her marriage plans. The angel explained how this would occur in the following verse, but Mary needed further evidence, so the angel Gabriel told Mary about her cousin Elizabeth who had also conceived a son in her old age after being called barren. (verse 36)
After hearing this testimony Mary accepted what the angel had said and began to walk in the confidence of what she was told, and everything came to pass as the angel had said.
These days its not normally an angel that speaks to us, but it is the Holy Spirit who urges us to do or say certain things to minister to others. We may question what we hear because of our insecurities and fears and ask God WHY ME? But there are a few things you must keep in mind when these opportunities come to you.
If God picks you that’s all that matters – not what you or anyone else thinks. You don’t need affirmation from anyone. If God said it, that settles it. He is sovereign.
God doesn’t need a lot from you to use you. He takes the faithfulness you have, uses that, adds to it, and causes you to bring forth something to bless many people.
Don’t be concerned about the details. God doesn’t generally tell you everything all at once. Just follow His instructions as you go, and everything will work out in the end.
If you find yourself in one of these situations it is important for you to recognize that God doesn’t make mistakes. If He selected you to do kingdom work, whether it be to preach, teach, speak to a homeless person or just sit quietly with someone who recently lost a loved one, your obedience is critical to the life of one of God’s people. And everyone of His people are precious to Him. Including you.
So instead of asking the question, “Why me?” I would ask of you, “WHY NOT YOU?”
